MY OPEN LETTER TO STEVE JOBS

My Open Letter to Steve Jobs

As some of you may already know, Apple Computer has decided to block the Flash plugin from all their mobile devices (iPhone, iPad and iPod), which in-turn blocks any content currently being broadcast over the web in Flash – which is a whole lot of voices, music, photos, video, opinions, etc.  This decision has the potential to put me and other small Flash developers out of work.  Please take a moment to visit the link below and read my letter to Apple CEO, Steve Jobs.  If you agree with my position or have reasons of your own to want Flash on these devices please sign the online petition I’ve started.  And please feel free to pass this link along to anyone you know – especially if they own Apple products.
Thanks in advance!

MY NEW OFFICE = I MISS MY CATS… kinda

March 20th, 2010

Okay, so this blogging thing is hard to keep up with, damn.  So much for my once a week post idea, but I do have a bit of an excuse, after 4 long years I’ve moved my little design operation out of my home and into more proper digs.  I’ve rented some office space in West LA – 3 mile commute – and it couldn’t be better.  I’m sharing the space with an old friend from Emerson College who owns a PR firm called Big Time PR, Marketing and Branding – visit them on the web here (I built the site ;) ).  It’s really nice to be back in a more official office environment and I even enjoy the short commute.  I always liked focusing on the day before me or decompressing from the one behind me on the way to and from work and I missed it a good deal when I didn’t have that.  I also missed listening to new music back and forth from work-  there’s just something about getting out of work on a summer night and cruising home with the windows down and the music up loud that allows me to connect with a new album more than any other method.

The big downside to the office thing is that I miss my old office mates, Magic and Paloma, my kitties.  They were great partners in crime and Magic was a whiz at taking dictation.  However, I don’t miss having cats sitting on my keyboard, or fighting in front of my monitor or embedding their little fine hairs in all of my equipment – every cloud has a silver lining as they say.

Well, that’s it for now.  Below are some images of my new home-away-from-home.  Next I’ll catch you up on my New Years resolution progress…  Stay tuned…

Oh and a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my younger brother Chris!!!!!

SKATEBOARDS AND LEARNING CURVES IN 2010

January 5th, 2010

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! I’ve finally gotten back from a long and much needed break and I’m ready to tackle this twenty-ten thing head-on.  I’ve set two resolutions for myself this year – one for fun, one for work.

Resolution #1:  Start skateboarding again.

Yes, I’m turning 37 this year and I somehow think it’s a good idea to jump onto a small wooden plank on wheels and launch myself into some concrete hole in the ground.  I was inspired by a film my brother insisted I watch called ‘Rising Son: The Legend of Christian Hosoi’ – IMDb Link – and from scene one I was back in 1988 tooling around New Hampshire pretending to be Tony Hawk.  My brother and I had loved skateboarding and were avid skaters from about age 12 to 18 and we’ve both occasionally gotten back on ‘the horse’ from time to time over the years, but I’m making a concerted effort this year to make it a larger part of my life again.   Why, you ask?  Simply put, because I miss it – it’s also a pretty good workout and exercise is something I could use a more of.

I’ve chosen a Stereo deck designed by Chris Miller as my ride into this closing-in-on-mid-life adventure.  My very first deck was a G&S Chris Miller ‘Faces’ model and my last real deck before my ‘retirement’ was a Schmitt Stix Miller model too, so it seemed logical and in the interest of good luck to stick to what worked in the past.

Wish me luck.

Ain't She a Bute!

Ain't She a Bute!

Resolution #2: Finally learn Actionscript 3.0

Actionscript is the programming language that runs all Flash applications including website like the ones I build.  Most of the website I make have literally thousands of lines of code the tell the site what to do and when – it’s what allows Flash to be interactive and fun.  When I began this career AS2 was the current standard language but has since been replaced by AS3 – much to the chagrin of all the design-minded ‘programmers’ out there.  I’ve made a few pathetic attempts to learn and work with it over the past year but always found myself frustrated and abandoning it for the soft and comfortable embrace of AS2.  But in 2010 I am making it a rule to not program anything in AS2 and just jump head-first into AS3 and get it over with.  It’s the same language obviously, but the subtle (and not subtle at all) differences with how it is written are mind-boggling frustrating.

Of my two resolutions this year the one I feel most likely to kill me is this one.

Wish me luck!

The Nightmare that is AS3

Well, that’s it for now.  I hope everyone had a happy and safe holiday.

P.S. Oh and I’m moving into a real office next week – so that happened.  Pictures and info coming soon!!

‘THE PURPLE ONE’ MAKES HIS GUITAR GENTLY WEEP

November 23rd, 2009

It’s becoming pretty obvious, pretty fast that this blog thing is going to be more about the “life and stuff like that” aspect of things and less about the actual goings on of the S8D world, but oh well.

Prince at the 2004 Rock and Roll hall of Fame Ceremony

Prince at the 2004 Rock and Roll hall of Fame Ceremony

I was recently reading the latest Rolling Stone, which gives a run-down of this years Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th Year Anniversary Concert, and there were some interesting stories about past RRHF ceremonies – crazy speeches, crazy performances, crazy people etc…  and one of these mini stories caught my attention for some reason.  Apparently, Prince, the year they inducted George Harrison, was asked to play a solo on “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” –  much to the chagrin of Harrison’s widow.  Prince claims to have never heard the song until they sent him a recording of it to learn for the show – how this is possible I have no idea.  Anyway, Prince agrees to do it only because Tom Petty  will be playing on it as well and it has always been a dream of his to share the stage with Tom Petty – “Free Fallin’” is one of his favorite songs (!?) – again, I have no idea how “Free Fallin’” can be one of his favorite songs, but he’s never heard “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” undeniably one of The Beatles greatest songs.

Long story short, Prince kills it.  I’ve always known he was a talented guy, but he really surprised me with this.  He nails the feeling of the song completely, his performance is totally over-the-top-rock-and-roll and the way he throws his guitar into the air and storms off stage at the end is downright awesome – where does the guitar go!?  Here’s the YouTube clip for your enjoyment.

I’m excited to announce that Jason Dugré has joined me in the reckless adventure that is Station 8 Design.  Jay is a longtime friend, frequent collaborator, one handsome S.O.B. and will be handling the thankless job of drumming-up new business for S8D.  He has an extensive background in pretending to be someone he is not so I think the shoes of the Sale Rep will fit him to a tee. In the coming year Jay and I will be making a loosely calculated attack on local and national businesses and indie feature distributors, growing the Station 8 brand and putting some change in our pockets – if all goes as planned anyway.  Any sales/new business requests should be run directly through Jay, please see the website for his contact info.

THE ROAD – READ THE BOOK, SEE THE MOVIE…

November 12th, 2009

in that order please.

My friend Josh was kind enough to bring me along to an LA Times screening of the new film The Road last night and I was pleasantly surprised indeed – it even included a Q&A panel with the Viggo Mortensen and the filmmakers.  I had read the book a couple of years ago and have not stopped thinking about it from time to time since then.  Neither the book or the movie is for everyone, they are dark, depressing and present a pretty grim outlook of what we as human beings are capable of becoming.  They also happen to be a beautiful testament to the hope, perseverance and love we as human beings are capable of as well.

The Book | The Film

The Book – I first learned of this book from an article in Spin. The lead singer of Arcade Fire had given it, along with a few other books, to Bruce Springsteen when the two had met for the first time.  I figured if it was good enough to give to the Boss it’s probably worth reading. The book was written by Cormac McCarthy (No Country for Old Men, Blood Meridian), is set in a not-too-distant-future, post-apocalyptic America, and follows the story of a father and son slowly making their way south down the east coast of the US by foot. That’s really all I’m going to say about the plot as it’s best to let it unfold not knowing – I think anyway.  It’s a quick and pretty easy read  - it’s 287 pages long, but reads like 150 – and is filled with the simplest, yet most poignant writing I’ve probably ever read.  You can order the book here if you are interested.

The Film - This isn’t a 2012 or Mad Max type post-apocalyptic story at all, it’s a heart-wrenching account of what could realistically face us if our planet and society begin to die.  The film was directed by John Hillcoat (The Proposition), adapted for the screen by Joe Penhall (Enduring Love), and stars Viggo Mortensen, Charlize Theron and Kodi Smit-McPhee – with nice cameos from Robert Duvall and Guy Pearce (bad false teeth aside) – oh and Nick Cave does the music.  It’s by-far the closest and most honest adaption of a novel I’ve ever seen.  I felt exactly the same emotions leaving the theater as I felt closing the back cover of the book and that has never happened for me after seeing an adaption of one of my favorite books.  Both the book and the film make you feel silly for all the petty grievances you have with life and help pull into focus what’s important and real. This is a movie I really would have loved to have done a website for – especially since I think the official website completely misses the tone of the movie.  In fact, the whole advertising/marketing campaign totally misses the mark as well.  It was an intentional decision I would assume the distributor made to try and make the film more marketable to a broader audience, but I think it does a disservice to the film and the book.  You can see the trailer (which sucks and is wildly misleading btw) and get some more info on the film here.

A few Quotes from the Book:

“He pulled the boy closer. Just remember that the things you put into your head are there forever, he said. You might want to think about that.

You forget some things, don’t you?

Yes. You forget what you want to remember and you remember what you want to forget.”

———–

“Nobody wants to be here and nobody wants to leave.”

———–

“You promised not to do that, the boy said.

What?

He poured the hot water back into the pan and took the boy’s cup and poured some of the cocoa into his own and then handed it back.

I have to watch you all the time, the boy said.

I know.

If you break little promises you’ll break big ones.  That’s what you said.

I know. But I won’t.”

———–

“Rich dreams now that he was loathe to wake from. Things no longer known in this world. The cold drove him forth to mend the fire. Memory of her crossing the lawn toward the house in the early morning in a thin rose gown that clung to her breasts.  He thought each memory recalled must do violence to its origins.  As in a party game.  Say the word and pass it on.  So be sparing.  What you alter in the remembering has yet a reality, known or not.”

NEW ACTIVEDEN ITEM NOW AVAILABLE

November 9th, 2009

I’m happy to announce that I’ve just had another file approved for sale on ActiveDen.net.  This one is a drag and drop mp3 player set-up as a retro 80s style tape cassette.  It’s a build off a player I created a few years ago for another project but updated and snazzed up for the 21st Century.

TAPE_PREVIEW

The player allows anyone with a website (or without one actually) to insert the player into their page and change the look, music, albums and the rest all from an outside XML file – so there is no need for the buyer to know Flash at all.  You can check it out here.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE

November 2nd, 2009

My friends hosted their annual (the 13th) Halloween party this last Saturday and, as it is every year, it was a blast.  They really go all out and it always ends up being a place to get some good photos.  Here are few from this years adventure.  If you like them you can see the rest here.

I’m excited to announce I have my first ‘Official Site’ link on Apple’s movie trailers page.  It’s for a quirky little modern-day noir film I did a site for call The Missing Person.  It stars Amy Ryan from The Office and Michael Shannon who was nominated for an Academy Award last year for playing the crazy-ass son in Revolutionary Road.  It starts running in theaters late November.

U2 AT THE ROSE BOWL – MY VERY FIRST POST

October 30th, 2009

Well, not that I actually expect anyone to ever really pay any attention to this, I thought I’d start this blog as a ‘News’ extension of my portfolio site.  And since I think I would hate writing solely about my work (websites, flash, ect…) I thought I’d also use this as a venue for dumping anything else that might come into my mind onto the world wide web – where I’m sure it will be used against me in a court of law at some point in the future.

Anyway, for my first post I’m going to vent a bit about the U2 show I attended the other night (Sunday October 25th, 2009) at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA.  I could go on and on about the lack of planning on the part of the Rose Bowl – it was a nightmare – but that’s a whole other story.  I’d like to just share my thoughts in general on the show itself.

In the late 80s and early 90s U2 was it for me.  I loved the music, the shows, the transitions from soft spoken Bono to in-your-face Bono – hell, I even pierced my ears because Bono had pierced ears.  But then nothing really  evolved.  The shows got bigger, the lights got brighter and that’s about it.  The music took a back seat to the theater of it all. Even the albums started to become populated with songs that were written to play live in huge stadiums – they didn’t feel personal any more.  And this 360 Tour seems to be the pinnacle of it all.  All the chemistry the band had on stage seemed staged, every five degrees you turned your head you’d see a big sing for Blackberry, real political prisoners were turned into graphic logos and eye-less masks, and so much of the crowd seemed more interested in taking crappy video or crappy photos with their phones than actually watching the show in front of them.  Again, that is a whole other story in itself.

The bottom line for me is this:  U2 was and is a great band, but they need to get out of their own way and be real again – they need to evolve  - they need to remember the music is the message, not the frills of a light show or the dumbing down of real social and world problems for the masses. Come back to me U2.

Well, there’s a bit of a silly rant which was all meant to lead to this.  The video below proves to me that U2 still has the chops to make great music as a great band without all the B.S. that has been packaged with them.  I’d love to see this U2 on tour – no spaceship, no video montages – just four guys cranking out good Rock ‘n’ Roll music.
